The Lung Association’s Provider Education Program (PEP), funded by The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MoHLTC), has a mandate to develop, implement and evaluate certified continuing medical education (CME) programs and materials that promote the Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) respiratory guidelines.

Our beginnings

Ontario’s Asthma Program (AP) is an evidence-based program that supports best practices for addressing asthma educational needs across a variety of healthcare settings and community environments. The goal of the AP is to reduce mortality, morbidity and health care costs for children and adults with asthma through integrated initiatives focused on health promotion and prevention, management, treatment and research and surveillance.

Program Mandate

The Lung Association’s Provider Education Program (PEP), funded by The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MoHLTC), has a mandate to develop, implement and evaluate accredited continuing medication education (CME) programs and materials that promote the Canadian Thoracic Society (CTS) respiratory guidelines.

The PEP, intended for primary healthcare professionals as a key initiative of the Ontario Asthma Program (AP) is led by a multi-disciplinary steering committee and chaired by OTS representatives whose purpose is to continually:

  • Advise on the asthma education needs of primary healthcare providers across Ontario, and;
  • Advise and review curriculum, evaluation, and educational tool development in accordance with the most recent recommendations of the CTS respiratory guidelines based on current research.

  • Asthma
  • Spirometry Interpretation
  • COPD vs. Asthma
  • Work-related Asthma
  • Preschool Asthma
  • COPD

Multiple methods of knowledge transfer are incorporated through our PEP workshops, and problem-based self-learning modules, resulting in enhanced learning outcomes for healthcare providers.
